Sightings of squirrels in the loftThe obvious way is to try to catch sight of one. In my case, one day when I heard the noise, I popped my head into the loft and shone a torch at the source of the sound, then held very still. Eventually, a squirrel popped its head up into the beam. Later on, I also saw the squirrel outside, running along my roof before disappearing through the hole it had been using to get into the loft space.

Smell of squirrels in the loft
Rats stink of ammonia so I've been told. Have a sniff of the infested area, if it smells normal, it's more likely to be squirrels than rats.
Timings of the noise of squirrels in the loft
Squirrels are most active during the morning and evening. I find it's quite unusual to hear them in the middle of the night.
Squirrel nest in the loft
When squirrels move into a loft they will make themselves a nest out of any material they can find. This usually means ripping your loft insulation to pieces and nesting inside it (see why remove squirrels). It is quite obvious when a squirrel has created a nest out of loft insulation, as you will see a big mound of insulation, kind of spiralled into a mound with an entrance hole in it.
Whatever you do, do not approach the nest unless you are confident the squirrels are gone. They are vicious and will protect their nest violently. The pest removal man I had out to remove the squirrels showed me the scars on his hands of a squirrel attack. Not nice.
