About squirrels
Squirrels are rodents of the Sciuridae family and are found all over the world except for Australia. There are many types of squirrel, including red, grey and ground squirrels (marmots, chipmunks, gophers etc). Like many other rodents, squirrels are generally regarded as a pest and it is usually best to remove them if they find their way into your house or garage.
Red squirrel - Sciurus vulgarisFound throughout Europe and Northern Asia, the red squirrel is approximately 19 - 23cm long in the body (plus approx. 15 - 20cm tail) and is a tree dwelling squirrel which raises its young in stick nests. In Britain, the red squirrel has largely been replaced by the larger grey squirrel which was brought over from North America.

Grey squirrel - Sciurus carolinensisNative to North America, but now found throughout Great Britain, Ireland and other parts of Europe. Much larger than the red squirrel, grey squirrels are approximately 23 - 30cm long in the body (plus approx. 19 - 25cm tail). This has led to the introduced grey squirrels largely displacing the native red squirrels throughout Britain, due to their larger size and superior fitness.
